Silicone Mold Logo: Emboss vs Deboss for Brand Casts

A soap brand sent “logo raised on the bar” art. The cavity we cut raised the logo in the mold face — so the bar came out with a recessed mark. They meant emboss on the cast, which is deboss in the mold. One naming swap burns a prototype week.

RUUIPON quotes custom soft tooling for brands at MOQ 50, prototype usually 3–7 days after CAD lock, quote ~24h on complete files. This page is only the emboss vs deboss fork for the finished piece — chocolate mm rules stay in the chocolate logo depth guide; tiny serif limits live in text legibility.

Custom silicone chocolate mold cavities with logo detail for emboss vs deboss choice
Say what the finished piece should feel like under a thumb — raised mark or recessed mark — then we cut the cavity the right way.

The Wrong Fork on Day One

Marketing says “raised logo.” Engineers say “positive.” Mold shops say “emboss in cavity” and mean the opposite of what the brand holds. Lock language on the cast first: raised on the piece, or recessed on the piece. We translate that into cavity geometry.

Photo-only briefs fail here. A flat PNG does not show relief direction. Send a side photo of a competitor bar, a clay mock, or write “raised 0.4 mm on the finished chocolate.”

What Emboss and Deboss Mean Here

Word on the RFQFinished castCavity face
Raised logo on piece (embossed cast)Logo stands proudLogo well cut into the mold (recessed cavity detail)
Recessed logo on piece (debossed cast)Logo sits below surfaceLogo stands proud in the mold

If you hate the jargon, skip it. Write “proud on bar” or “pressed into bar” and mm depth. We will confirm the cut in CAD before pour — drawing path: see cavity drawing before full payment.

Decision Table by Pour

PourUsually betterWhy
Tempered chocolate / gummyRaised mark on piece (mold well)Reads in photos; demolds if depth stays in band
Epoxy / UV resin coastersEither; raised cast logos need draftSharp wells trap air — see resin guide
Wax melts / candlesShallow raised cast or soft recessDeep wells hold wax and tear thin letters
CP soapRecessed on bar often cleanerProud soap logos chip in shipping
Ice / hospitalityBold raised cast, wide strokesThin emboss disappears in frost

Depth and Letter Rules

  • Most brand logos land 0.3–0.6 mm relief on the cast. Under ~0.25 mm washes out in photos; over ~0.8 mm on tiny serifs tears or traps air.
  • Stroke width: keep letter islands wide enough to flex without ripping — detail limits: logo detail limits.
  • Edge margin: leave silicone wall and cavity spacing so logo wells are not at the tray lip — multi-cavity layout.
  • Food retail: platinum food path when you claim contact — buyer spec.

Shore A Still Matters

Soft Shore peels deep wells easier; firmer Shore holds crisp edges on shallow marks. Wrong Shore feels like a “logo problem.” Start from the Shore hardness guide, then set emboss/deboss depth — not the reverse.

If demold sticks only at the logo, fix depth and draft before drowning the tray in spray — release agent guide.

What to Mark on the RFQ

  1. Raised or recessed on the finished piece (one sentence)
  2. Target depth in mm and min stroke width
  3. Vector or high-res art + forbidden thin hairlines
  4. Pour material and peak temperature
  5. Photo of a physical sample you like, if any

FAQ

Can one tray do both emboss and deboss logos?
Yes on different cavities. Say which SKU gets which relief.

Is deeper always sharper?
No. Past ~0.6–0.8 mm on fine type you gain scrap, not clarity.

Do you fix naming mistakes on the drawing?
We flag cast vs cavity language on CAD review before you pay the tooling balance.
