What Food Brands Should Ask a Silicone Mold Supplier Before Ordering

A chocolate brand wired a deposit after a chat that only covered “food-grade silicone” and “fast shipping.” Three weeks later they had trays, no usable material docs for their retailer, cavities 0.8 g light vs the bag claim, and no agreed sample pour with their couverture. The supplier did not lie — the brand never asked the right questions before ordering.

This is the pre-order question list we walk food and confectionery buyers through at RUUIPON (Shenzhen since 2018, MOQ 50, prototype commonly 3–7 days after CAD lock, quote ~24h on a complete brief). It is not the factory-vs-trader scorecard (how to choose a silicone mold supplier). That post is about who you hire. This post is about what you ask once you are talking to a real soft-tooling shop.

Ask for docs, grams, and a sample gate before you lock MOQ 50 — not after trays land.

The Questions Brands Skip — Then Stuck After PO

Retail and Amazon food paths punish vague tooling. If you only ask “is it FDA?” you may get a material TDS that does not match the path your buyer wants, or a tray that demolds fine in the factory photo but tears on your pectin formula. Put these topics in writing before deposit:

  • What document pack is available for this project (and what is not claimed).
  • Target piece weight / cavity volume and how it will be verified.
  • Shore A band and demold plan for your formula.
  • Who approves the sample pour — and what fails the gate.
  • MOQ, reorder lead time, and how trays ship (so corners are not crushed).

Food-contact hubs we already publish: food-grade silicone molds, FDA vs LFGB buyer guide, and product pages for custom gummy molds / custom chocolate molds.

Material and Documentation Questions

AskWhy it mattersWeak answer to push on
Which silicone grade for food contact on this PO?Locks platinum-cure food path vs non-food craft silicone“All our silicone is food safe” with no grade named
What FDA / LFGB documents can you attach for this material lot path?Retailer / import files“FDA certified factory” with no report scope
Are docs material reports, or claims about your finished filled candy?Avoids false expectationsMixing mold material docs with finished-food claims
Will you mark “on request” items that need lead time?Stops launch surprises“Yes, everything, tomorrow”

We do not claim FDA-certified facilities or invent ISO badges. For food jobs we use food-grade platinum options and provide documentation on request for the project path you name. Deeper buyer-spec language: food-grade buyer spec.

Geometry, Grams, and Cavity Questions

  1. Finished piece grams (or ml) — write the bag claim and the tolerance you will accept on the sample pour.
  2. Logo / text depth — ask how deep the mark will be in mm and whether letter islands survive demold on your Shore.
  3. Cavity count vs tray OD — densest grid is not always net output; see gummy mold cavity count.
  4. Pour method — hand pour, flood-and-scrape, or depositor notes you will actually use.
  5. Shore A band — soft enough to peel, stiff enough to hold scrape; we advise bands, not magic single numbers without your formula.

Sample Gate and Approval Questions

Before you multiply trays to MOQ 50 (or higher), ask:

  • How many prototype trays are included after CAD lock?
  • Who pours the approval — your kitchen or theirs with your formula sample?
  • What fails the gate (light cavities, tear on demold, logo washout, sticky release)?
  • How are changes billed if you revise artwork after the first sample?

Prototype timing at RUUIPON is commonly 3–7 business days after CAD lock — conditional on complexity and material. Do not treat that as a promise for every undercut-heavy tool.

FAQ

Is “FDA silicone” enough on an RFQ?
No. Name the contact use, ask which documents apply to the material path, and avoid factory-cert slogans without reports.

Do I need LFGB if I only sell in the US?
Often FDA-path docs are the priority for US retail. EU retail commonly asks LFGB sections 30/31 style material evidence — confirm with your importer.

Can I skip the sample if I am in a hurry?
You can — and you own the scrap risk. We recommend a sample gate before multiplying trays.

When is MOQ 50 the wrong path?
When you already need plant-scale steel depositor tooling as the primary CapEx. Soft silicone still helps for pilots and seasonal shapes.
