Why the Same STEP File Gets Very Different Silicone Mold Quotes

Why identical STEP files get wildly different custom silicone mold quotes - missing specs, grade assumptions, prototype scope, and how to compare factories apples to apples.

Why the Same STEP File Gets Very Different Silicone Mold Quotes

You send one STEP file to three suppliers. Quote A is half of Quote B. Quote C looks middle but "includes everything." None of them are lying in the email - they are bidding different jobs with the same filename.

This is why custom silicone mold quotes scatter. Geometry is only one input. Assumptions about Shore A, food docs, cavity count, prototype inclusion, and who owns the tooling do more price damage than the mesh itself.

Same File, Three Prices - What Usually Happened

Typical split we see when buyers forward competing quotes:

  • Quote A (lowest) - industrial platinum or unspecified grade, no sample, single-cavity assumption, EXW, docs "available on request"
  • Quote B (highest) - LFGB food compound, multi-cavity production layout, prototype included, DDP-ish shipping language, revision buffer
  • Quote C (middle) - food-grade claimed without market named, prototype optional, cavity count guessed from the bounding box

Your STEP did not change. The commercial envelope around it did. If you pick A because it is cheap, then ask for FDA paperwork and a 12-cavity tray later, you did not save money - you deferred the real quote.

Price scatter tracks scope assumptions - grade, cavities, sample, and Incoterms - more than the STEP filename.

Fill the blanks once and quotes compress. Use the RFQ template so every shop answers the same questionnaire.

NRE Buried vs Visible

Some quotes show a low unit price and hide master/tooling work in silence. Others show NRE as a line item and a cleaner unit price. The second looks more expensive until you ask Quote A what happens on redesign or reorder.

Ask explicitly:

  1. Is master/tooling included or extra?
  2. Who owns the tooling after payment?
  3. What is reorder price at the same quantity?
  4. What triggers a new NRE (geometry change, Shore change, cavity count change)?

Grade and Documentation Gaps

"Food grade" on a chat message is not the same as platinum-cure compound with FDA-compliant or LFGB-tested documentation for your market. Documentation has a cost. Omitting it makes a quote look sharp until a retailer or Amazon food listing asks for papers.

Name the market in the RFQ. US retail and EU/Germany distribution are not identical paperwork paths. See FDA vs LFGB.

Prototype Scope Differences

One supplier's "sample" is a photo of a similar tray. Another's sample is a pourable tray in your Shore and grade, often ready within a few days after CAD approval. Those are different products.

Insist on:

  • Same silicone family as production
  • Same cavity geometry you will approve
  • Written approval criteria (weight, demold, flash, logo fill)

Skipping sample to "save time" is how you buy fifty trays that all share one demold bug. Sample vs production handoff: sample vs production.

Factory vs Trader Pricing Behavior

Traders can look cheaper because they shop multiple workshops and shave the visible NRE. Factories look higher when they price DFM, sample, and QC honestly. Neither label guarantees quality - but the quote structure tells you who will argue about scope later.

Questions that expose the model: factory vs trading company and how to choose a supplier.

RUUIPON quotes as a Shenzhen mold maker for casting tools - chocolate, gummy, resin, candle, soap, ice - at production MOQ of 50 per design. We answer RFQs in roughly a day when files are complete. We do not invent a public "$X.99 per mold" calculator because undercuts and food docs do not fit a web form.

How to Compare Quotes Apples to Apples

Build a one-page scorecard. Force every supplier onto the same rows:

  1. Platinum-cure vs tin-cure
  2. Food compound + named market docs
  3. Cavity count and spacing assumptions
  4. Wall thickness / Shore A stated
  5. Prototype included? Lead time after CAD approval?
  6. MOQ and unit price at your quantity
  7. NRE / tooling ownership / reorder price
  8. Incoterms and packing
  9. Revision policy after sample

The lowest number that fails three rows is not a deal. The mid number that matches your real job usually is.

When you are ready for a number tied to your geometry - not a generic band - email [email protected], WhatsApp +86 135 3006 2969, or use /contact. Attach STEP/STL, cavity target, cast material, and market. We will state our assumptions in the quote so you can paste them onto the scorecard next to anyone else.

FAQ

Can two honest factories still differ on price?
Yes. Labor rates, master method (CNC vs print), and how much DFM risk they bake into the number still move quotes even when scope matches.

Should I share competing quotes?
You can share the scope rows, not just the total. "Beat this price" without matching cavity count and docs just recreates the mismatch.

Why won't you publish fixed USD prices?
A 20 mm sphere and a 200 mm sculpted candle shell do not share tooling hours. Bands and factors beat fake guarantees - see the how much does a custom silicone mold cost page.
