Master Models for Silicone Molds: 3D Print, CNC & Cast Resin Compared

Your silicone mold copies whatever the master looks like - layer lines from a rushed FDM print become permanent texture on every resin cast until you re-tool. RUUIPON builds custom silicone molds at MOQ 50 with prototypes in 3-7 days. This guide compares 3D print, CNC, and cast resin masters so you pick the right substrate before we pour platinum silicone.

Quick answer: For logo fidelity and production trays, CNC aluminum or high-res SLA masters win. FDM works for blocky prototypes if you seal and sand to Ra <10 µm. Cast urethane from a printed pattern bridges cost and detail. All porous masters need sealer + mold release before pour; vacuum-degassed silicone (~0.1% shrink) copies surface within ~0.05-0.15 mm if the master is stable.

What Makes a Good Silicone Mold Master

The master is the positive your mold negative copies once - not a draft you iterate on the tray. Weak masters crack during demold, swell in silicone, or off-gas and inhibit platinum cure.

Why the Master Model Matters More Than Shore A

Buyers fixate on Shore A 30 vs 35; the master decides whether your logo reads at 0.4 mm emboss depth. A fuzzy master cannot be sharpened in silicone - only blurred further.

  • Dimensional chain - master error + silicone shrink ~0.1% + cast material shrink = finished part tolerance. See shrinkage guide.
  • Surface replication - matte vs gloss: surface finish spec.
  • Platinum cure sensitivity - uncured resin, sulfur clay, some 3D print residues inhibit cure - tray stays tacky.
  • Demold survivability - thin print horns snap; CNC ribs survive 50+ mold pulls from the master during R&D.

Two-part molds copy registration keys from the first half - master alignment during pour matters. Registration keys.

3D Print Masters: SLA, FDM & Post-Processing

SLA (resin print) is the default for custom mold shops when CAD exists. Layer height 25-50 µm is typical; wash and UV-post-cure per resin TDS before molding.

Print processDetailPrep before silicone
SLA standard resinFine logos, 0.3 mm line weight possibleIPA wash, full UV cure, sealer, release
SLA tough / ABS-likeSurvives demold betterSame; less brittle on deep undercuts
FDM PLA/PETGVisible layers unless sandedFill primer, 400-800 grit, sealer mandatory
FDM resin-coatedSmoother than raw FDMCheck coat adhesion - peeling ruins mold

Logo minimums on print masters tie to logo detail limits. Undercuts on print: draft angles.

CNC & Machined Masters

CNC aluminum or PMMA masters justify cost when you expect reorder at MOQ 50+ or need repeatable logo depth ±0.05 mm across a 12-cavity layout.

  1. Tool radius limits - internal corners carry CNC radius; design fillets ≥0.5 mm or EDM for sharp creases.
  2. Polish grades - SPI B-2 to A-2 for gloss chocolate; matte bead blast for soap texture.
  3. Scaling for shrink - master scaled +0.1% for silicone + casting resin combined shrink on tight fits.
  4. Storage - machined masters survive years; store labeled with rev ID. Revision process.

Prototype path: CNC master in 3-7 days, first silicone sample, then production tray. Prototype to production.

Cast Resin & Hand-Sculpted Masters

Cast urethane from a silicone blanket mold of a sculpt is common for figurines and candles. Expect ±0.2 mm and occasional bubble pits unless vacuum cast.

  • Sculpt → mold → cast master → production mold - two mold cycles; budget time.
  • Wax or clay originals - never pour platinum directly on sulfur clay; cast intermediate first.
  • Product cloning - ship reference SKU; we build master from measured CAD. Manufacturer brief.

Wall thickness around copied detail still needs 2.5-5 mm silicone walls on the tray - master sharpness does not replace cavity spacing 8-20 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my FDM print as the final master?
Only after seal, sand, and sample approval - layer lines copy into every cavity. Most brands upgrade to SLA or CNC before MOQ 50.

Does RUUIPON build masters?
Yes - CNC and SLA in-house or via partners; quote with mold order. Prototype 3-7 days.

Will silicone stick to 3D prints?
Uncured or unsealed prints stick. Seal and release every time.

What file format?
STEP preferred; STL acceptable with stated units (mm).

Existing product - no CAD?
Ship physical part; we reverse-engineer master. Allow extra week for scan/CAD.

Master vs mold ownership?
Custom masters for your SKU stay your tooling; clarify on PO for reorder.

MOQ if I supply master?
Still MOQ 50 trays - master supply reduces iteration, not unit minimum.
